What to expect: weekends at the Heart & Soil (and more)
What happens when a nursery stops selling plants?
Hi! I'm Jo, writing from Heart & Soil homestead, a 1-acre homestead in the Far South of Cape Town, South Africa. Every week I share inspiration and education for your growing journey. Thanks so much for reading!
You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.

Our nursery back in 2020
To the extent we are transformed, the world is transformed.
What to expect the next few months at Heart & Soil
As many of you know, Heart & Soil was born to unusual circumstances: a drought eight years ago, COVID five years ago. It has always been shaped by the fact that Chris, a horticulturalist on our street, had extraordinary experience of growing in the Deep South.
This June, an era is coming to an end as Chris moves down the street and starts a new phase in his growing.
In the midst of change, we’re celebrating ten years of growth on the farm. This milestone is an opportunity to reflect and recalibrate. While few people come to buy plants on weekends, people visit to chat, attend workshops, buy produce, buy seedlings. We love these visits. You are still welcome!
Over the next few months we’ll sell our remaining plant stock. So you’ll still be able to buy plants, but you may start to see gaps and fewer plants up front. I’ll give updates and keep communicating through this process.
To allow for workshops early on Saturdays, our new hours will be:
Saturdays and Sundays, 10:30-1pm
Moving forward:
We’ll continue to organise and conduct workshops
We will organise periodic group purchases of specific plants, drip irrigation, and more.
I’ll be available for group workshops, tours, and collaboration with organisations. Our goal is for the lessons we’ve learned on our homestead to be helpful within our community and beyond.
Over the next few months, we’ll be exploring starting an NGO/NPO. You’ll see a few emails focused on themes related to this vision. We’ll need the skills and energy of community to make a meaningful contribution, so we’ll involve others from the very beginning.

Upcoming workshops

Noah: helping cold ducklings recover since he was 5.

Our original seed library from 2017. We’ve learned a lot since then.
