Growing Mondays: Seven Generations of growth
Think beyond our one little life.
Hi! I'm Jo, writing from Heart & Soil homestead, a 1-acre homestead in the Far South of Cape Town, South Africa. Every week I share inspiration and education for your growing journey. Thanks so much for reading!
Welcome to Growing Mondays, where I share ideas to help you grow edible and medicinal plants.
Keep walking, though there’s no place to get to.
Don’t try to see through the distances. That’s not for human beings.
Move within, but don’t move the way fear makes you move.
Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened.
Don’t open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

Ripples with a banana flower boat
Seven generation stewardship is a concept that urges the current generation of humans to live and work for the benefit of the seventh generation into the future. It is believed to have originated with the Great Law of the Iroquois – which holds appropriate to think seven generations ahead and decide whether the decisions they make today would benefit their descendants.
Think beyond our lifespan
If our growing can ripple beyond our lifespan, what would our impact be?
It’s easy to get caught in the day-to-day work of our own lives, but we are just so small and we live for such a short time. And one of the best ways to be happy is to connect with a bigger story.
If you have a moment today, try to imagine how the tiny carrot seed you plant today links to the future. Maybe it changes the future by changing you. Or maybe it changes the future because you give the carrot to someone else, and they are changed a little bit.
If we can think beyond this season, beyond all our seasons, to our hopes for many many years into the future, it can be a scary thing, with climate change looming and violent wars raging.
But if our actions can be carefully thought out, they can serve both our present and build to the future. Growing is a big part of that.
Here’s to a week of building and hoping, and PLANTING. All the planting.

This massive banana flower is the culmination of many years of smaller ones. Yes, it’s all about bananas right now!
